Modification Kits
"Modding" your tube amplifier should be undertaken only if you have some experience in working in tube amplifiers, and understand the dangers of high voltage and how to work around it safely. You will need experience in soldering,
and have soldering / de-soldering equipment (available here). With certain kits, you will also need a multimeter (available here).
If you are unsure of your qualifications or abilities to safely perform these
tasks, we strongly recommend that you enlist an experienced individual to
install these modifications.
Check back often as the list of available 'mod' kits grows.

SpikeZapper II Amplifier Protection Kit
Stock No: SZK-2
$9.95 |
"SpikeZapper" spike protection kit
Protects your amp from high voltage spikes in two ways. Spiking to the output tubes is usually caused by an underbiased amp which is delivering too much voltage to the outputs. These spikes drastically reduce the life of the output tubes, and can possibly also damage the output transformer - both very costly. Works with any amplifier using 8-pin octal output tubes: 6L6, EL34, 6550, 5881, 6V6.
In addition, the SpikeZapper II contains a surge suppresor (metallic oxide varistor) installed in the power supply of the amplifier to suppress spikes coming from the power line.
All
components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, solder, hand tools.

VSM-1 Fender® Volume Sensitivity Mod Kit
Hot Rod Deluxe, Hot Rod DeVille, Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille amps only
$5.95 |
Volume Sensitivity Mod for Fender® Amps
This kit is designed to fix the overly sensitive master volume control in the drive channel of the Hot Rod Deluxe, Hot Rod DeVille, Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille amplifiers. All of these models have problems with their master volume control on the drive channel. If you turn up the volume to "2", you're being blasted out of the room. It's difficult to find a moderate volume setting - the control is very touchy between "1" and "2". Turning it above "2" doesn't increase the volume much more. This mod replaces the
100KB pot in the master volume with the pot that Fender should have used - a 250KA audio taper. The amp's master volume becomes much less sensitive and offers a nice linear increase in volume so that you can easily control the proper volume setting. Requires soldering and desoldering capability, chassis disassembly and front panel PC board removal (removal of all pot knobs and nuts, and nuts on jacks, as well as removal of internal screws on the PC board).

VSM-1 Fender® Volume Sensitivity Mod Kit
Hot Rod Deluxe, Hot Rod DeVille, Blues Deluxe and Blues DeVille amps only. Contains replacement pot, solder wick, and complete detailed instructions.

Fender® Blackface Kit
Stock No: FBK-1x (specific to particular model)
$24.95 (with vintage parts)
$19.95 (with modern parts)
A customer's review ...
I said I would get back to you about my Super Reverb and how the Blackfacing went ...
In short the amp sounds great. This old beat up chassis/worst of the Silverface circuits (arguably) now looks and sounds like a boutique amp just off the showroom floor. The overdrive is where the difference really shines. The amp just has more life now and has a creamy smooth overdrive ...
A fresh pair of matched 5881’s I had stashed around really made the difference. Without changing anything in the bias circuit again the 5881’s were 10mv when plugged in and easily could be ranged through to 32mV. I settled at 25mV and the tubes are within a hair of each other, and most importantly sound great when clean or overdriven.

Blackface Kit for Silverface Fender® Amps
This kit changes the design of your late 60's or 1970's vintage Silverface Fender® Amp to the original "Blackface" amps of the early-to-mid 1960's. Most players agree that the pre-CBS blackface amps sounded much better than the pale-imitation silverface successors designed by the CBS engineers. With this kit, you can take your amp back to the Leo Fender® design. In addition, you also restore the bias-setting capability of the amp, replacing the somewhat useless "balance control" of the silverface. These modifications are completely reversible, and no permanent changes to the chassis (such as drilling holes, etc) are required.
Available with either vintage or modern type components.
Sorry, but this won't change the "cosmetics" of your amp - it will unfortunately still have a silver front panel. :-(
All components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, hand tools, multimeter.

Note: Read before ordering!
Not for reissue amps (1980's-present). Not for the Ultra-Linear series of amps, such as the silverface 135 watt Twin Reverb of the late 70's / early 80's.

Fender® Bassman Upgrade Kit
Stock No: FBU-1x
$19.95 (with vintage parts)
$15.95 (with modern parts)
|
Fender® Bassman Upgrade for Guitar Players
Over the years, a lot of guitar players have picked up a vintage Fender® Bassman amp and used it for guitar. The Bassman was never a really popular bass amp (especially today), so a vintage silverface or blackface Bassman is available at cheap prices. These amps can be made to rock with this modification. Add your own external effects pedals, and you're set to go!
This mod is completed in the driver section of the amp, turning a muddy sounding Bassman into a fine 50 watt guitar amp. Make sure the amp is in good shape to start with - this mod won't fix existing problems. Works on vintage 60's and 70's Bassman amps (blackface or silverface).
All components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, hand tools.

FBU-1V Fender® Bassman Upgrade Kit

Fender® EL-34 Conversion Kit
Stock No: F34-1
$11.95
|
Fender® Amp Conversion to EL34 Tubes
Any vintage Fender® Amp that uses 6L6 power tubes can be converted to EL34 tubes. Now, the useful life of the EL34 is somewhat shorter than the 6L6, the change in tone quality may make some players feel that it's a good trade-off.
This mod is completed in the output section and also in the bias section of the amplifier. All needed parts are included except for the EL34 tubes. We do carry the EL34 tubes - you can purchase them here.
Note: This vintage Fender mod kits uses "modern" replacement components - metal film resistors, for example. This kit is not available with "vintage" components (such as carbon composition resistors).
Components (except for the tubes) and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, hand tools, and a multimeter to adjust the bias/balance. To adjust the bias after the modification is complete, you'll need a bias adjusting instrument and meter, such as our BiasPlug.

Fender® Tone-Tweaking plus Dual-Channel Reverb/Vibrato Conversion Kit
Stock No: DRV-1V
$17.95
|
Fender® Amp Tone Tweaking plus Dual Channel Reverb and Vibrato
Vintage blackface and silverface Fender® Amp with two channels (Super Reverb, Twin Reverb, Pro Reverb, etc) were designed with a normal channel and a "vibrato" channel. The reverb and vibrato only worked in the vibrato channel by design. But you can tweak the tone quality on the normal channel and also add reverb and vibrato to the normal channel as well (your existing reverb and vibrato controls will control the reverb for the normal channel - no extra controls or drilling of the chassis is required). The result is an amplifier
with the original sound on the vibrato channel, but a distinctly different tone characteristic in the normal channel, along with the option for reverb and/or vibrato. Add an external A/B box for switching, and you have increased the versatility of your Fender®.
<Note: The DRV-1V kit contains "vintage" components (carbon composition resistors and cloth-covered wire) to maintain the vintage integrity of your Fender amplifier>
Components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, and hand tools.

Note: Read before ordering!

Fender® Gain Boost Cable
Stock No: GBC-1
$9.95
|
Fender® Gain Boost Cable
Now, here's a way to get additional drive and gain from your vintage Fender® amp, without any internal modifications at all. This mod cable turns your reverb footswitch into a gain booster footswitch, and changes the reverb control into a gain/overdrive control. You do lose the reverb on your amp with this gizmo, but a lot of players don't use the internal reverb anyway. The beauty of this device is that it is easily and quickly reversible - you simply unplug the cable, and reconnect the cables to your reverb pan.
You'll need a vintage (60's or 70's) blackface or silverface Fender® tube amp with built-in reverb (Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, Pro Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, etc.) Simply unplug the two cables on the back going to the reverb pan, and plug in this cable between the two jacks on the back panel. Simple? You bet!
No tools, no equipment, no disassembly of amp - easy!

Peavey® 5150 Bias Modification Kit
Stock No: PBM-1
$15.95
|
Peavey® 5150 Bias Modification Kit
The purpose of this modification is very simple - it changes the fixed bias design of the Peavey® EVH-5150 to the much-preferred adjustable bias. Peavey® later corrected this fault in their series II version of the 5150 - if your unit has red and black meter probe jacks on the left-hand side of the back panel of the amplifier, you already have adjustable bias and do not need this mod kit.
Components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, hand tools, and a dab of silicone (RTV) adhesive or hot glue. To adjust the bias after the modification is complete, you'll need a bias adjusting instrument and meter, such as our BiasPlug.

Marshall® JCM900 EQ Improvement Mod Kit
$18.95
|
Marshall® JCM900 Equalization Improvement
No doubt, the JCM900 series of Marshall® amps are well-liked, well-built units from the 1990's. But everyone's taste in tone quality is a little different, and a lot of players say that the JCM900 could use a little less treble, and a bit of a boost in bass and mid-range - especially the bass. This mod kit gets rid of that ear-piercing "ice pick" treble and brightness, along with smoothing the grittiness of the distortion -- making the amp sound more full and punchy. We don't know of anyone who has installed
this kit who didn't like the results.
This mod is a bit more complex than some of the other mod kits we offer. Since the JCM900 series have circuit boards, it is necessary to gain access to the bottom side of the preamp board to make these modifications. It's not difficult, but we wouldn't recommend this kit to someone who has never worked in electronics before - especially if you have no experience working with printed circuit boards.
This kit is designed for both JCM900 series heads (such as the model 4100) and the JCM900 combo units (such as the 4502). This kit is not designed for the early 90's series of Dual Master models such as the 2100, 2101, 2500, 2501, or 2502 models.

Dunlop Crybaby Wah Modification Kit
This mod is designed to change the characteristics of the wah sound from your stock Dunlop Crybaby to a tone that is much more pleasing to most people - and more like many of the vintage wahs from the late 1960's. This is accomplished without changing the stock inductor.
This mod is designed only for the standard GCB-95 pedal, and only for those made since 1990.
This mod makes the wah sound a bit thicker, with a little more bass and midrange response. The wah sound is also a little more vocal sounding (a more pronounced W-a-a-a-a-h), and it has a little bit more gain than the stock design.
Components and complete instructions included. You'll need to add: Soldering equipment, de-solder equipment, solder, and hand tools.

Safe Voltage Discharge Cable

Tube Amplifier Safe Voltage
Discharge Cable
This cable is designed to help you work safely inside your tube amplifier. The first step, of course, is to always unplug the amplifier from the AC supply. It's also a good idea to let the amp "rest" for a period of time before removing the chassis, in order to let the high voltage bleed off.
This cable will help ensure that you minimize the possibility of getting shocked by stored voltage in the amplifier. You connect this cable between the terminals of the standby switch and chassis ground. Allow the cable to remain in place for about a minute while the voltage safely discharges, and then remove the cable.
Instructions included.
